I am a small annual herb that is related to other plants with square stems like mint, rosemary, lavender, and basil. My thick, dark green leaves are wrinkled and covered with soft gray hairs, forming a fragrant circle at my base. I grow tiny vibrant blue tubular flowers that provide nectar for bees and butterflies. When my flower heads dry, my nutritious seeds shake loose and are eaten by birds, small mammals, and people. I often grow more after a wildfire and thrive in open, sunny areas with loose, sandy soil. Once I have grown a bit, I am drought tolerant and help keep sandy washes from eroding away in heavy rains, making me well-suited and helpful in a changing climate.
