I am a clumping grass with pale green leaf blades that grow in soft mounding tufts. In the spring I send up tall stalks lined with yellow flowers. By summer, I develop seeds that birds love to eat. People have even gathered my stalks to form the base of coiled baskets. I often grow in dense patches, providing a place for baby deer to hide after they are born and my young, soft shoots are a favorite food for deer, especially when I resprout after a fire. Butterfly caterpillars eat my leaves and ladybugs shelter on me in the winter to be protected from the cold. My extensive root system spreads deep into the soil, helping to stabilize streambanks and prevent erosion during heavy rains, especially after wildfires. I tolerate flooding, heat, and drought and wildfire helps me grow stronger, which means I help my ecosystem survive in a changing climate.
