I am a shrub with strong branches, bunches of small white flowers, and a blue berry-like fruit in the summer. Many animals like to eat my berries or leaves, including birds, squirrels, and deer. My flowers also attract butterflies and hummingbirds. I often grow along stream banks, where I hold the soil in place and provide shade and protection to fish. I can survive fires by growing back up from my roots underground, and fire also helps my seeds in the soil to sprout. These abilities make me well-suited to adapt to a changing ecosystem and able to persist in a future that is warmer and dryer.
