I am a tall broomlike evergreen shrub that thrives in sunny riparian areas along streams and riverbanks. My narrow leaves are coated in fine silvery hairs, giving me a soft gray glow and reducing water loss in hot weather. In spring and summer, I brighten the water’s edge with clusters of thimble-shaped pink and purple flowers. These blooms attract native bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, and moths that need nectar for food. Many moths also lay their eggs on me so that their larva can feed off my leaves. I grow in dense thickets, spreading through underground rhizomes that send up many straight stems. My stems have been used for arrows and construction, and other parts of me for medicine. Beneath the surface, my strong spreading root system holds streambanks in place and helps prevent erosion during heavy rains. My thick growth provides shelter for small mammals and birds, though I can also crowd out other plants. After flowering, I produce cottony seed heads. Birds may eat the seeds or gather the fluff for nesting. I am drought-tolerant and can survive dry periods, but my growth and flowering depend on water availability. I am fire hardy and can resprout after a burn, yet more frequent and severe fires, combined with reduced water due to climate change can stress me and the streamside ecosystems that depend on me.
