Learn more about me and my climate connection
Más información sobre mí y mi relación con el clima
I am a tall tree that grows along rivers and streams where my roots can reach plenty of water. My broad, heart-shaped leaves flutter in the breeze. In spring, I produce hanging flower clusters called catkins that provide pollen for native bees. Soon after, I release fluffy white seeds that drift through the air to new homes. My leaves and twigs feed deer, rabbits, and insects, while my large branches and hollow trunks shelter birds, bats, and other wildlife. I have supported humans with my many uses- from building materials to medicine. My wide-spreading roots hold streambanks together, preventing erosion during floods. Though I grow quickly and can survive flooding, warmer temperatures and shrinking groundwater from climate change make it harder for me to thrive.
