I am a shrub with light gray-green leaves and big clusters of yellow flowers which bloom for most of the year. After flowering, especially in the spring and summer, I have seed pods that look like paper lanterns and seeds that look like small peas. My seeds and flowers are bitter, but edible when cooked. When touched I have a strong smell that people either love or hate. I am the home to the harlequin bug—a black, orange, and white striped insect that lives its entire life amongst my flowers and branches. They drink my special sap which makes them taste bad to predators. I can grow in dry and even salty soils, which helps me be resilient to more extreme drought and change in precipitation patterns expected due to climate change.
