Climate Science Alliance team members were excited to join Pala’s Environmental Department team at Vivian Banks Summer School on two days in June to lead fun Climate Kids activities with the students.
On June 16th and June 30th, 2023, Climate Science Alliance team members were excited to join Pala’s Environmental Department team at Vivian Banks Summer School to facilitate Climate Kids learning activities with the classes.
On Friday June 16th, students learned about the importance of “good” fire in southern California’s ecosystems, as a part of our upcoming Climate Kids Fire Trunk. Students collaborated to create their own habitat mosaic as part of a fun art activity that will be included in the Trunk’s lesson plan. Jeremy Zagarella, of Pala’s Environmental Department, joined to discuss the prescribed burn work that is being done at Pala.
On Friday June 30th, students learned about local pollinators and how to protect them by participating in activities from the Climate Kids Pollinators Trunk. John Pepper, Lead Cultural Resources Monitor and local beekeeper, joined to show students his beekeeping equipment and answer questions about beekeeping. Students then planted wildflower seeds to help support local pollinators.

With support from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, SDG&E's Environmental Champions Initiative, and our network of partners, we are expanding our Traveling Trunks to include new curriculum about wildfire and climate change, centered around Indigenous fire stewardship and the importance of fire in California's ecosystems.
