I am a small shrub that keeps its green leaves all year long. I attract butterflies and bees with my fragrant pink flowers that bloom in the spring and summer. They find it easy to get pollen and nectar from my open-faced flowers. The fruit-like rose hips that I make after pollination feed other insects, birds, small mammals, and even people. The rose hips can be used to make a tea that is a significant source of Vitamin C. Luiseños also use my stems to make arrow shafts and pipe stems. Some animals like mule deer eat my green leaves and munch on my stems, even though I have sharp prickles on them! I have spreading underground roots that help me to grow into a large protective thicket (for animals to hide in) and also keep the soil in one place in heavy rain. I survive in low rainfall and when temperatures change, but if the weather gets too hot with the changing climate and there isn’t enough water, I may have fewer flowers.

Soy un arbusto pequeño que mantiene sus hojas verdes todo el año. Atraigo mariposas y abejas con mis fragantes flores rosas que florecen en primavera y verano. Para ellos es fácil obtener polen y néctar de mis flores abiertas. Los escaramujos, que parecen frutas, se forman después de la polinización y alimentan a otros insectos, aves, pequeños mamíferos e incluso personas. Los escaramujos se pueden utilizar para hacer un té que es una fuente importante de vitamina C. Los Luiseños también usan mis tallos para hacer astas de flechas y cañas de pipa. Algunos animales, como los venados mulos, se comen mis hojas verdes y mastican mis tallos, ¡a pesar de que tengo espinas afiladas! Tengo raíces subterráneas que se extienden y me ayudan a crecer hasta formar un gran matorral protector (para que los animales se escondan) y también a mantener el suelo en un lugar cuando llueve mucho. Sobrevivo con pocas lluvias y cuando las temperaturas cambian, pero si el clima se vuelve demasiado caluroso con el cambio climático y no hay suficiente agua, me brotan menos flores.
