In partnership with the Cleland Lab and Natural Reserve System at UC San Diego, we were excited to collaborate with Condor Visual Media—an Indigenous-led media production team—to share the story of Kupiihaaw Mataayum (Autumn Gathering), an event hosted in partnership with Tipey Joa Native Warriors on Kumeyaay lands at the Kendall Frost Marsh Reserve last October to celebrate the first "Hear Our Names" signage installation.

The Climate Science Alliance is grateful to have partnered with the Cleland Lab and Natural Reserve System at UC San Diego over the years to advance community-engaged science, and most recently, through the Hear Our Names project.

On October 17th, 2024 over 100 attendees came together on Kumeyaay lands at the Kendall Frost Marsh Reserve to join us in celebrating the plants and animals of the marsh as part of the Kupiihaaw Mataayum (Autumn Gathering) event. Hosted by the Climate Science Alliance in partnership with Alliance Technical Advisor Ana Gloria (Martha) Rodriguez and her organization Tipey Joa Native Warriors, and the Cleland Lab and Natural Reserve System at UC San Diego, the event provided a unique opportunity to explore the marsh and interact with new signage that introduced twelve native plants in their Kumeyaay name as well as their English, Spanish, and Latin scientific name. Find out more details about this event on the blog.

To tell the story of Kupiihaaw Mataayum (Autumn Gathering), we worked with our close partners at Condor Visual Media—an Indigenous-led media production team—to document the community event and create a 3-minute video about the first Hear Our Names signage installation and highlight the event speakers, activities, and community impressions.
