I am a shrub with light gray-green, pointed leaves covered in tiny hairs. When brushed, I smell strongly herbal. In the spring and summer, I grow stalks of small white or light purple flowers beloved by native pollinators and honey bees. Birds and small mammals like to eat my seeds, especially in the winter when other food is harder to find. I can grow in rocky and dry soil, including in hot places and on steep slopes from the coast to the desert. Like many of my fellow fire-adapted shrubs, I can regrow from my roots after fire as long as I’m at least one year old. I am only found in southern California and northern Baja and am under threat because of human development and poaching. On top of that, drought and intense wildfire that are expected to worsen because of climate change will greatly impact my ability to thrive.
Soy un arbusto con hojas puntiagudas de color verde grisáceo claro cubiertas de pelos diminutos. Cuando me rozan, huelo fuertemente a hierbas. En primavera y verano, crezco tallos de pequeñas flores blancas o violetas claras que adoran los polinizadores nativos y las abejas melíferas. A los pájaros y los pequeños mamíferos les gusta comer mis semillas, especialmente en invierno, cuando es más difícil encontrar otros alimentos.
