Mariela Declet-Perez, a Project Lead of the DUNAS project, is back with another update from the field. Read about the DUNAS team’s meeting with Reserva Marina — a community group that oversees the protection of a local reef, sea turtle census, and sand dune restoration along the coast of Carolina, Puerto Rico.
¡Segunda reunión con líderes comunitarios! ¡Les presento a Reserva Marina!
Reserva Marina es un grupo comunitario que tiene a su cargo varios proyectos en las costas del municipio de Carolina. Parte de sus proyectos son la protección del arrecife de la Isla Verde, patrullaje de tortugas marinas, y la restauración de dunas en el área de Isla Verde cercanas al área de Pine Groove. El líder comunitario ayuda también a otros grupos con la implementación sus ideas en el área de Isla Verde. Uno de estos los es Orillas sin Colillas, los cuales buscan disminuir hasta eliminar la presencia de colillas de cigarrillos en la playa. El grupo trabaja en colaboración con Para La Naturaleza haciendo censos de peces en las zonas costeras de Hacienda la Esperanza. Fue interesante ver la dinámica que se dio cuando en medio de nuestra conversación recibieron una llamada pidiendo ayuda ante la presencia de una tortuga en la orilla. Ellos sin ningún reparo se prepararon para ir a socorrerle y documentar el evento.
El poder contar con Reserva Marina en el proyecto provee una oportunidad de intercambio de información. Nosotros podemos aprender de sus trabajos relacionados al arrecife y censo de peces, mientras que les proveemos a ellos conocimiento sobre las dunas. Al final de esto se trata de ayudarnos los unos a los otros para poder echar pa ‘lante la isla. Poder poner nuestro granito ayudando a las comunidades en sus esfuerzos y poner ese granito de arena en las futuras generaciones. Ya que de ellas es lo que nosotros hagamos hoy.
Second meeting with community leaders! Introducing Reserva Marina!
Reserva Marina is a community group that oversees various projects along the coast of the municipality of Carolina, Puerto Rico. Some of their projects include the protection of the reef of La Isla Verde, sea turtle census, and sand dune restoration in the area of Isla Verde specially near the area of Pine Grove. The community leader also helps other groups initiative to be implemented in the area of Isla Verde. One of those groups are Orillas sin Colillas, who aim to reduce and eliminate the presence of cigarette butts from the beach. The group is working on a future collaboration with Para la Naturaleza to do a fish census in the area of Hacienda la Esperanza. It was interesting to see how they reacted to receiving a call about the presence of a sea turtle in the coast of the Carolina beach in the middle our conversation. Without any qualms they got ready to go to aid the turtle and document the event.
Having Reserva Marina in the project helps us to learn from their work related to the reef and fish census, while we help them with knowledge about the dunes. After all this it is about helping each other in order to help the island move forward. To be able to contribute by helping communities in their efforts and inspiring future generations. Since what we do today will ultimately impact them.

Este Proyecto se hizo posible mediante una subvención de la Sociedad para la Conservación de la Vida Silvestre (Wildlife Conservation Society WCS), llamada “Pue rto Rico se Levanta: Aprendiendo de eventos extremos para crear y mantener un futuro resiliente”.
