Mariela Declet-Perez, a Project Lead of the DUNAS project, is back with another update from the field. Read about Mariela's meeting with V.I.D.A.S., a group dedicated to the growth and cultivation of coral reefs in the municipality of Vega Baja.

Introducing V.I.D.A.S.!
Las siglas V.I.D.A.S. se refiere a Vegabajeños Impulsando Desarrollo Ambiental Sustentable. Este grupo se dedica a la siembra y propagación de arrecifes de coral en las costas del municipio de Vega Baja. Ricardo Laureano es el coordinador del grupo y experto en corales. Como dato curioso durante nuestras conversaciones descubrimos que nuestras familias pueden estar relacionadas. El grupo también trabaja directamente con diferentes comunidades de Vega Baja. Una de estas es la Comunidad Los Naranjos. Según su historia la comunidad fue fundada hace 145 años por esclavos libertos. Luego de su fundación el Marqués de Cabo Caribe los quiso expulsar, pero el rey de España le amenazó con quitarle sus tierras si expulsaba a los esclavos libertos. Su contexto histórico es una de las razones que lleva al grupo V.I.D.A.S. a unirse a nuestro trabajo. Ellos entienden la relación entre la protección del sistema ecológico y el valor histórico que los sistemas de dunas tienen y quieren transmitirle esto a la comunidad. Quieren darle ese sentido de pertenencia de sus tierras.
V.I.D.A.S. stands for Vegabajeños Impulsando Desarrollo Ambiental Sustentable (in English Vegabajeños Promoting Sustainable Environmental Development). This group is dedicated to the growth and cultivation of coral reefs in the coast of the municipality of Vega Baja. Ricardo Laureano is the group coordinator and coral reef expert. As a fun fact, in our conversation we discovered our families might related. The group also works directly with other communities in Vega Baja, for example Los Naranjos. According to their history Los Naranjos was founded by free slaves 145 years ago. Once the community was founded the Marquis of Cabo Caribe tried to throw out the freed slaves from the lands, but the king of Spain threatened the Marquis, if he expelled the free slaves from the land the Marquis would lose his lands. This historic context is one of the reasons why V.I.D.A.S. wants to join us in the DUNAS project. They understand the ecological and historical value the dunes system has and the want to transmit this to the community. They want to give that sense of ownership of the land to the people.

Otra razón por la cual deciden colaborar con nosotros es para poder aprender a trabajar y restaurar dunas para llevar este conocimiento a su propia comunidad y poder ser parte de este movimiento hacia lo que sería una restauración verde de los ecosistemas marinos. La comunidad está muy pendiente a la posibilidad de querer poner un rompeolas o pared en las zonas costeras del norte. En lo cual coincidimos al considerarle un un error ya que hay estudios que prueban que este tipo de estructura altera por completo el proceso de sedimentación del área creando más daño que bien. En el caso de la zona de Vega Baja una estructura de este tipo significaría la muerte de los arrecifes que V.I.D.A.S. ha estado cuidando por años. Ya que esta barrera cambiaría las corrientes y arrojaría más sedimentos sobre los arrecifes. Luego de que me expresaran esta preocupación me percato mediante una conversación con otra compañera que esto es algo que muchos alcaldes de municipios costeros están considerando.
Another reason why they want to collaborate with us is to learn the process of restoring the dunes so they can share the knowledge with the community and be part of the movement towards a green restoration of the marine ecosystems. Something that the community is aware of is the possibility of the government building a sea wall and jetty in the north coastal zone if the island. We all consider this an error as there are studies that show that these artificial structures can change the sedimentation process and create greater damage. For the municipality of Vega Baja this could mean the death of the coral reefs that V.I.D.A.S have been protecting for years. These barriers will change the currents and deposit more sediments on the coral reef. They expressed these worries about the sea wall and jetty and later I confirmed that this is something that the government is taking into consideration.

A través de esta conexión con el grupo V.I.D.A.S. se nos ha de unir el grupo comunitario de Caño Tiburones y posiblemente personal del Instituto de Ciencias para la conservación de Puerto Rico. Es mediante colaboraciones comunitarias que muchos de estos grupos han tenido grandes logros y se mantienen de pie.
Through this union with V.I.D.A.S. we could possibly be joined by the community group of Caño Tiburones and members of the Science Institute for the Conservation of Puerto Rico. It is by community collaboration that these groups have been having results and stand together in their fighting.
