California has recently experienced a series of atmospheric rivers, a meteorological phenomenon where a long channel of condensed water vapor makes landfall, resulting in large quantities of rain and snowfall. The recent storms in California have caused flooding, erosion, and damage to infrastructure. Julie Kalansky, an advisor to the Climate Science Alliance and a climate scientist at the California Nevada Adaptation Program and Scripps Institute of Oceanography, is featured in a KPBS news article about storm damage to the ocean beach pier, where she explains the frequency of these events, and reminds us that climate change must be considered when rebuilding and planning for the future.
