Former Science Program Manager Paula Ezcurra is co-author on a new paper published by the journal Limnology and Oceanography in their recent issue. The research, from Scripps Institute of Oceanography, UC Riverside and other institutions, focuses on the carbon sequestration potential of mangrove ecosystems. The research, led by Matthew Costa, examined sediment cores from a vast array of settings to better understand the factors that control how mangrove ecosystems sequester carbon. The findings can be used to inform habitat protection efforts, and can be applicable to coastal ecosystems like local wetlands and marshes as well.
