The Climate Science Alliance and Desert Research Institute are excited to announce a new joint position, based in Reno, Nevada. The Indigenous Climate Stewardship Lead will build sustained and meaningful engagement with Indigenous community partners, with a particular focus on building pathways between Tribes and scientists, stakeholders, and non-tribal partners in Nevada.


The Desert Research Institute’s (DRI) Division of Atmospheric Sciences, the Climate Science Alliance (CSA) and the Climate Center Group at DRI is seeking an exceptional and resourceful individual to join our team as the Indigenous Climate Stewardship Lead. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail oriented and has experience in project management, community engagement, and climate adaptation and resilience planning and projects. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands on experience working collaboratively with diverse partners to advance projects focused on advancing Indigenous focused community resilience projects, plans, and activities. This is a new role and we are interested in investing and supporting an individual who wants to develop their professional and leadership skills in support of Indigenous community-based projects. The position is located at DRI’s Reno, NV campus but willing to consider a partially remote option.


The Indigenous Climate Stewardship Lead will have the primary function of facilitating engagement activities focused on sustained and meaningful engagement with Indigenous community partners, with particular focus on building pathways for engagement, support, and partnership between Tribes and scientists, stakeholders, and non-tribal partners in Nevada. The Indigenous Climate Stewardship Lead will serve as a member of the CSA and work closely with the Climate Center Group and support efforts to working collaboratively to develop and conduct projects and programs that advance Tribal climate resilience and adaptation actions through knowledge dissemination, capacity building, and innovative community engagement. The Indigenous Climate Stewardship Lead is responsible for representing CSA and the Climate Center Group in various settings involving Native and Indigenous constituents and will work as part of the team to coordinate and oversee activities to support and maintain strong relationships with all partners, but, be a resource and connection to and for Indigenous communities.


The Indigenous Climate Stewardship Lead will work closely with Tribal representatives, scientists, managers, and community partners to support advancement of Tribally-visioned, led, and implemented projects within CSA and the Climate Center Group’s portfolio. This includes, but is not limited to, the creation and implementation of convenings (workshops/summits/events), development and dissemination of tools and resources, and being a point of contact to support efforts to better understand and implement projects that support Tribal resilience and nature-based options for adaptation planning and actions.
