Tools to Share Your Story: GIS from a Cultural Viewpoint
This will be a hands-on class in basic Geographic Information Systems (GIS) concepts using Esri’s ArcGIS Online (AGOL). The National Geographic Society defines GIS as “a computer system for capturing, storing, checking and displaying data related to positions on Earth’s surface”. It is a tool to help us understand relationships and patterns in spatial data. With a suite of new apps, this online platform also offers opportunities for multimedia storytelling that we will explore.
Topics to be covered include:
How to access the AGOL platform
Searching for and downloading data
Creating data layers, manually and with other tools such as Survey123
Making maps using that data
Sharing data and maps, especially how to protect data from unauthorized access and a discussion about Indigenous data sovereignty
Hands-on work creating a StoryMap with data from Connecting Wildlands and Communities and/or Resilient Restoration
Additional resources for training and troubleshooting
